As the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state competition draws near, Windsor FCCLA students are filled with excitement while preparing their STAR projects.
Students compete in hopes to make it to the FCCLA National Conference this year in Orlando, Florida. Last year Windsor FCCLA sent four students to represent WHS in Seattle, Washington.
Many students in FCCLA are taking STAR projects to state, where they will present their projects. Projects range from Career Investigatio, where students study a career and present their research to judges, to Culinary Arts, where students prepare a quality meal for judges.
FCCLA adviser Jessica Teal (staff) comments on the challenges the team faces during preparation: “Definitely knowing a scenario. If there is some type of scenario component of a project, knowing it and kind of anticipating all the things about that scenario. For example, when looking at innovative foods and how you really work towards catering and providing a new idea to an audience that has certain needs,” Teal said.
Teal went on to say that some students look for help from the community.
“Getting out into the community to get insights from industries helps for students who maybe would benefit from meeting someone who does it for their career. Having that background knowledge helps,” Teal said.
Students from Windsor are taking projects in categories such as Entrepreneurship, Sports Nutrition, Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry and Fashion Design. There are really events for anyone as FCCLA is for anyone.
Vice president of membership Adeline Freytag (11) will compete in Career Investigation.
“I am investigating forensic psychology. I have to do self-assessments along with research on the career and need to find experience from the career, whether that be an interview or shadowing someone,” Freytag said.
Freytag will present her research on forensic psychology to judges in hopes of qualifying for Nationals.
“I think I’ll do okay. I am not exactly sure where I will place for this project because I’m not super familiar with this kind of project. I think Nationals is a possibility,” Freytag said.
Vice president of the chapter Sonia Miller (11) feels confident in the chapter and the journey to state, along with the hopeful journey to nationals. Miller attended nationals last year and earned Entrepreneurship Level 2: Gold, Top 10 National Finalists along with Lyla Bumford (11) and Ruth Stephens (11).
“I think everyone is doing a project that they all know well. Each team has a lot of knowledge relating to their project. Looking at a lot of people’s projects, they look really, really good, so I think we are definitely gonna have some National qualifiers,” Miller said.
The Colorado FCCLA State Conference is April 17-19.
