Staff and students celebrated Halloween with a little bit of competitive fun. People gathered in the downstairs commons to compete against each other in a costume contest.
People could enter into three categories: singles, couples and groups. The groups mostly consisted of staff departments.
Trevor Wynn (staff), a math teacher, got creative with the math department for their Halloween costumes. What was their costume? They were fast food mascots.
“One of our math teachers, new math teacher Ms. Devall, was just throwing ideas out left and right. Then she decided, ‘I really wanna dress up as a cow’ then we were like, okay,” Wynn said.
They went off of what Devall said and came up with the idea to go as fast food mascots. Jack in the Box, Little Caesars and even Colonel Sanders made an appearance; Wynn dressed as the Hamburglar.
The costume was “easy money” to put together and Wynn liked it better than the year before when the math department dressed as the Addams family and he dressed as Morticia Addams. “I didn’t have to dress as a woman this year so…” Wynn said.
While the teachers got to have some Halloween fun, the students sure didn’t skip out on the day of dressing up. Kolby Chambers (12) got to show off his intricate pirate costume and dress with his friend Claire Boyer (12).
“Me and my friends had this joke where we were a pirate crew and so we had originally planned as me and my friend group all going as pirates,” Chambers said. “Most of them dropped out, but me and Claire were both pirates.”
Chambers’ costume consisted of pieces from the thrift store and Amazon and, he said, was not the easiest thing to get together. “It was very hard to put together, finding all the stuff and making sure that it would ship and … it was rough,” Chambers stated.
For Chambers, Halloween is a time to express oneself and have a little fun. This is also the case for Ashley Randle (11).
“I just think it’s, like, showing my personality and it’s just really fun to wear something that I don’t wear every day,” Randle said. Randle was a plague doctor for Halloween with a costume that featured an iconic bird-like mask and a top hat.
With the students and staff having a bit of Halloween fun, Chambers had some final advice for people who would like to dress up.
“Don’t be afraid to dress up,” Chambers said. “Go all out. It’s more fun when you go all out, both for yourself and the people around you.”
