The 2025 masters tournament was April 10-14 at Augusta National, bringing in golf enthusiasts worldwide to witness the prestigious event. The Masters is not only known for its rich history and iconic green jacket, but also for how difficult it is to attend in person. Tickets are extremely limited and can only be obtained through a random lottery system, making it one of the hardest sports events to get into. Fans often wait years just to walk the famous fairways of Augusta.
At WHS, students from all grade levels watched the masters. Jackson Wall (12) said, “My dad and I watched every round.”
The final day of the tournament was filled with ups and downs. Rory McIlroy started the day with the lead but faced challenges early on. English golfer Justin Rose played extremely well, shooting a 66 on his final round of the masters. McIlroy missed a crucial putt, which sent both into a sudden-death playoff to determine the winner.
Girls golf coach Sam Boshart (staff) said, “I always enjoy listening to our players’ perspectives on the game and who they are rooting for. The day after the Masters, we were able to have some great conversations about mental toughness and overcoming adversity. Rory was an amazing example of not giving up or letting the moment get away from you.”
In the playoff, both McIlroy and Rose hit their tee shots onto the fairway. Rose reached the green, but McIlory landed four feet from the hole, making his birdie. Rose missed the putt to tie, making McIlroy the winner of the 2025 masters and earning him the famous green jacket.

Wall said, “I wanted McIlroy to win more than anything. When he missed his putt to win, my heart dropped, but when his sudden-death shot, we knew he was going to win.”
With McIlroy winning the 2025 masters, he completed the career grand slam. A career grand slam means winning all four major golf championships: the Masters, the US Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. He won three of them before the age of 25; however, it took him another 10 years to win the final one. He became the sixth golfer to complete it, joining legends like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. This win not only earned him the green jacket but also secured him as one of the greatest golfers ever.
Luke Harris (12) said, “My favorite part was watching Bryson DeChambeau play; he inspired me to get better and try way harder.”
Patrick Reed finished third at nine under par, while Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, came in fourth at eight under. Meanwhile, a fan favorite, Bryson DeChambeau, who was in contention earlier, ended tied for fifth with a disappointing final round.
