A variety of hobbies and interests are prominent among the student body and there are some students who like to get crafty with needles and yarn.
Crochet and knitting is a cozy way to spend time and it can be fun to create things. This is definitely the case with Ace Carson (12).
“It makes me feel productive even when I’m doing nothing. I can just do nothing but still be doing something,” Carson said.
Carson has been crocheting for almost eight years since she was 10 years old and learned how to crochet from her mom. “I was watching ‘The Voice’ with my mom and Heidi was wearing a crochet dress, and I was like, ‘I really want that.’ (My mom) was like, ‘You can make it.’”
Carson loves to make clothes and her favorite piece that she has made was a flame sweater. It is her “greatest accomplishment,” she said. The black sweater features bright orange flames rising from the bottom.

Another crochet-er who walks the halls is Makira Kueny (12). Kueny started crocheting during the pandemic in an attempt to find something to do. She has been happily partaking in crocheting ever since.
“It can be an easy craft, especially once you learn it and you can just like, put on a movie or a podcast and it’s just something nice to chill and do,” Kueny stated.
Kueny likes to make clothing like sweaters and hats, but there is one article of clothing that will hold a special place in her heart: “I love doing bucket hats,” Kueny said.

While there are many people who have picked up the crochet hobby, there are some who went the knitting route, like Kimberlin Cohen (12).
Cohen hasn’t been knitting for very long and just like Carson, they learned from family. “My grandma does a lot of knitting and crocheting and sewing and basically anything involving fabric. So, she gave me two pairs of knitting needles and I was like, ‘Well, I have all this yarn,'” Cohen stated.

Although Cohen hasn’t finished any pieces, they find the overall activity to be enjoyable and fun. “I just do it, like, cause it’s relaxing,” Cohen said. “It also gives me something to do with my hands that isn’t, like, playing video games.”
Crocheting and knitting can be fun hobbies to simply pass the time or for people who like to craft. Some students show off their creations and others might not. Regardless, the activities are enjoyed by many and hold a special place in the hearts of students.
